Summary

The program of a Women & Family Complex translates into a contemporary transformation of a traditional Korean courtyard house on an urban scale. The courtyards of Space Salim represent both the feminine and the masculine. The complex is shaped by multiple connections to the city.

The ground floor is criss-crossed by public spaces. The courtyards are not gated yet offer a feel of protection. Along the connecting routes a twenty-four hour liveliness of the complex is provided by workshops, food courts, hand craft and commercial activities mixed with entrances to meeting rooms and boarding facilities. All spaces are multi interpretable and connect directly to a bustling metropolitan life.

The building consists of two groups of masses, in both horizontal and vertical directions. The top masses are veiled by a connecting screen. The bottom masses visually appear and disappear while exploring the sloping site surroundings.

In total there are seven storeys, some of double height. An open air loft with a parking lot sits on top of the basement and connects to the southern access of the building. A transparent connection to the opposite railway is accomplished. The eco-garden on the fourth level opens up on the south-east side for an perfect rhythm of sunlight supply. The more peaceful meeting facilities and auditorium are adjacent. The boarding facilities on top have south side living spaces and a cool north side for sleeping. Both are connected by communal spaces.
